Why online stores look for a Zendesk alternative
Zendesk is a widely used helpdesk; according to the company, more than 80,000 businesses rely on it. It is built as a general service platform for every industry, and its pricing reflects that. For an online store with a small support team, a few facts from Zendesk’s own pages explain why many merchants compare Zendesk alternatives before they renew:
- Costs stack per agent and per AI resolution. On zendesk.de, Suite Team costs €55 per agent per month billed yearly or €69 monthly. AI agents are billed per automated resolution: 5 per agent per month are included on Team plans, each further one costs €1.50 (committed) or €2.00 (pay-as-you-go), as shown on zendesk.de on 7 October 2026. The Copilot add-on adds €50 per agent per month billed yearly, available only on Suite Professional and above.
- The cheapest plan is email ticketing. Support Team at €19 per agent per month billed yearly is an email-ticketing plan without messaging/live chat, social channels or voice.
- Store actions have to be built. Zendesk AI agents can run Shopify actions such as cancel order or create refund through action flows that you configure and attach to procedures. For WooCommerce, a Zendesk connector has looked up orders since September 2026; refunds and cancellations are not documented for it.
- EU hosting depends on the plan. The Data Center Location add-on, which keeps service data in the EEA, is free from Suite Professional (€115 per agent per month billed yearly) upwards, but it is not activated automatically.
- Pricing is in motion. Since 18 May 2026 Zendesk has been moving accounts to “resolution tiers” funded by a per-agent allowance in US dollars, so your actual AI cost may differ; check the current pricing page before you decide.
Zendesk is not a poor product; it is built for a broader job than post-purchase support in an online store.
A worked example. A store with three people in support wants messaging and AI on monthly billing. Zendesk Suite Team: 3 × €69 = €207 per month, with 15 automated resolutions included and €1.50 to €2.00 for each one beyond that. Sondercase Growth: €89 per month for the whole team, with 750 AI drafts and 75 store actions, roughly 400 resolved cases. Billed yearly, the comparison is €165 against €69. Zendesk’s pricing page does not state whether VAT is included, and its pages are inconsistent on whether action flows are included in Suite Team. Sondercase prices are final prices, including VAT for customers in Germany.
What to look for in a Zendesk alternative for ecommerce
- Actions, not only answers: can the AI refund, cancel, change an address or start a return in your store, and under whose rules?
- A price you can plan: per agent, per ticket, per resolution or flat. Calculate your busiest month.
- Your shop system: check WooCommerce support at the level of AI actions, not only an order sidebar.
- Channels in the plan you buy: WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook are often add-ons or pay-as-you-go.
- Data protection: company location, hosting region, and a DPA from day one.
- Setup: pre-built ecommerce workflows versus flows and procedures you build yourself.
1. Sondercase: the Zendesk alternative built for Shopify and WooCommerce stores
Who it is for: small and mid-sized online stores on Shopify or WooCommerce, especially in the DACH region, whose tickets are mostly about existing orders.
Pricing basis: flat monthly plans in EUR with all features and your whole team included. Starter €39 per month (€29 billed yearly) for 150 AI drafts and 15 store actions, about 100 resolved cases; Growth €89 (€69 yearly) for 750 drafts and 75 actions, about 400 cases; Scale €199 (€159 yearly) for 2,500 drafts and 250 actions, about 1,500 cases, plus priority support and guided onboarding. No per-seat fees, no per-resolution fees, no setup fee.
Strengths: Sondercase handles post-purchase cases end to end: WISMO and tracking, returns, warranty and defect claims, cancellations, address changes, product and policy questions. It reads live order data, carrier tracking (DHL, DPD, GLS and more) and customer history, then handles the reply and the store action. Replies can run fully automatically, per category, with the reasoning and a confidence score. A refund, a cancellation, an address change, a return with label through the built-in returns portal, or a replacement order comes fully prepared, and you release it with one click. Uncertain cases go to a person. Email, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook are included in every plan.
Data and setup: company based in Dresden, Germany; EU-first data processing wherever a provider allows it; DPA concluded at onboarding. Setup is guided, with no engineering and no migration: you connect your existing support inbox and your store.
Limits: Shopify and WooCommerce only, focused on email and messengers. If you also need IT or HR ticketing, a general helpdesk is the better fit. Full comparison: Sondercase vs. Zendesk.
2. Freshdesk: the closest like-for-like Zendesk competitor
Who it is for: service teams of any size and industry that want a classic ticketing helpdesk at a lower per-agent price.
Pricing basis: per agent plus AI sessions. On the German price page, Freshdesk (email and Facebook) costs €17, €52 or €84 per agent per month billed yearly; Freshdesk Omni, which adds web chat, WhatsApp and Instagram, costs €29, €75 or €115. The Freddy AI Agent is billed per session, not per resolution: 500 sessions are included once, then €45 per 100 sessions.
Strengths: lower entry price than Zendesk, a free Freshworks app “Shopify for AI Agents” with nine AI actions, a free Freshworks app “WooCommerce for AI Agents” with 14 AI actions (for Freshdesk Omni), and an EEA data center selectable at signup.
Limits: store actions are set up by you in AI Agent Studio, from templates, Freshworks apps or custom workflows; custom API actions need technical configuration. Unresolved conversations and previews also consume sessions. More: Sondercase vs. Freshdesk.
3. Gorgias: the Zendesk alternative for Shopify-only brands
Who it is for: ecommerce brands on Shopify that want chat, SMS and voice in one helpdesk.
Pricing basis: per billable ticket in US dollars. Starter $10 per month (50 tickets), Basic $50 billed yearly or $60 monthly (300 tickets), Pro $300 or $360 (2,000 tickets). Per Gorgias’ pricing FAQ, each automated AI Agent interaction costs $0.90 (annual) or $1.00 (monthly), $1.50 above the plan allowance.
Strengths: native AI order actions in Shopify (cancel, edit shipping address, remove or replace an item, reship for free), 150+ app integrations, voice, SMS and TikTok Shop.
Limits: AI Agent and Order Management (self-service) are listed for Shopify only, not for WooCommerce; cancel, address edit and item removal are documented for unfulfilled orders; return requests run through Order Management on Shopify, return labels through apps such as Loop Returns. More: Sondercase vs. Gorgias.

4. Fin (formerly Intercom): the Zendesk alternative for messenger-led support
Who it is for: companies that run support, sales and commerce through an in-app and web messenger. Intercom rebranded to Fin in 2026, and Fin has been part of Salesforce since September 2026; the helpdesk plans are still sold as Intercom with the Fin AI Agent.
Pricing basis: per seat plus outcomes, billed in US dollars only. Essential $29, Advanced $85, Expert $132 per seat per month billed yearly ($39, $99, $139 monthly; list prices, Intercom is testing a lower Essential price), plus $0.99 per Fin outcome. Outcomes include handoffs at the end of a configured Procedure, not only full resolutions.
Strengths: a mature messenger, Fin on many channels, a native Shopify app, and Procedures that can handle returns, refunds and order changes with a human approval step. Berlin office.
Limits: Fin drafts Procedures for Shopify, but you must review each step and set them live. WooCommerce connects via catalog connector, not natively. EU hosting is only available to new workspaces on Advanced or Expert with a contract. More: Sondercase vs. Fin (Intercom).
5. eDesk: the Zendesk alternative for marketplace sellers
Who it is for: sellers on Amazon, eBay, Kaufland, Walmart and other marketplaces, plus their own store. Operated from Dublin, Ireland, with data processed in the UK and the EEA.
Pricing basis: per agent per month in US dollars (same amounts in EUR in the euro area): Essential $45 billed yearly or $55 monthly (1 store or marketplace), Growth $99 or $125 (5), Professional $129 or $159 (10). AI Agent $0.99 per outcome, charged only when it answers or takes action.
Strengths: marketplace coverage, Shopify, WooCommerce and Shopware integrations, AI procedures for return and cancellation decisions. Limits: per-agent pricing plus outcomes; connected stores capped by plan. More: Sondercase vs. eDesk.
6. armincx by Chatarmin: the DACH suite with custom pricing
Who it is for: ecommerce brands in the DACH region; its WooCommerce page addresses shops from about 100 tickets per month, and its Shopify page puts the business case at about 500 support tickets per month. armincx belongs to chatarmin.com GmbH, Vienna.
Pricing basis: not published; custom offer after a demo. The vendor describes the model as a flat rate without seat costs plus variable AI credits, or as paying for what the AI actually automates; concrete prices only in a call. Migration is an add-on.
Strengths: according to the vendor, shop actions in Shopify, WooCommerce and Shopware 6, returns with labels via Sendcloud or DHL, many DACH integrations (JTL, Xentral, Billbee) and hosting in Germany. Limits: no self-serve trial documented for the service suite, and prices only in a demo (a free Shopify chatbot app has existed since 09/2026); voice, socials and marketplaces listed as add-ons. More: Sondercase vs. Chatarmin.
How to choose between the Zendesk alternatives
If your team supports a Shopify or WooCommerce store and most tickets are about orders, start with Sondercase: it does the post-purchase work in your store, replies fully automatic if you want and store actions ready for your approval, at a price that does not grow with every agent or every resolution. If you need a broad helpdesk for several departments, Freshdesk is the like-for-like switch. Shopify-only brands with voice and SMS look at Gorgias, messenger-led companies at Fin, marketplace sellers at eDesk, and Shopware or JTL shops at armincx.
Test before you decide. Enter your store domain in the Sondercase live demo and watch it resolve a real case from public store data, no signup needed. Then run the 14-day trial in draft mode next to Zendesk: nothing reaches a customer or your store until you approve it, and once the replies are right, you switch them to automatic.
